The Global Alternative Tourism Network (GATN) is a project of the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs (APAY) that has been supported by Bread for the World since its inception in 2012.

Each year more than 4,000 young people travel under the various programs and activities initiated or organised by the YMCAs. Through this GATN project, the APAY hopes to:

  •  help YMCAs to develop responsible and sustainable form of travel that has a low carbon footprint and which helps to promote a low carbon lifestyle;
  • encourage YMCAs to work with local communities as important stakeholders to learn about climate change and benefit in the form of realised community projects, employment and income generated from economic social enterprise activities;
  • introduce young people to a more responsible and sustainable way of travel, one that provides opportunities for human encounters and is educational. Such activities could have a transformative effect on the lives of these young people and provide Global Citizenship education.
