World YMCA extends Secretary General’s term to December 2028

Date: 08 January 2025

The World Alliance of YMCAs on 7 January 2024 announces the extension of Carlos Sanvee’s term as Secretary-General to December 2028. This decision reflects the confidence and appreciation of the Executive Committee and the broader YMCA Movement for his dedicated leadership.

World YMCA President Soheila Hayek comments:

“Since January 2019, Carlos has steered the World YMCA through critical moments, including the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, and has been a driving force in adopting our shared Movement-wide strategic framework, Vision 2030. While his leadership has been pivotal, the success of Vision 2030 is also a testament to the remarkable efforts of the Areas and National Movements across our 120 countries. I believe that their collaboration, commitment, and belief in this shared roadmap have unified and energized the YMCA family like never before.”

Looking ahead to significant governance transitions in 2026, the Executive Committee also recognizes the importance of continuity.

Soheila Hayek went on:

“Extending Carlos’ term ensures stability during this period, reinforcing the momentum behind Vision 2030 and our collective mission to empower young people and communities worldwide to build a just, sustainable, equitable and inclusive world, where every person can thrive in body, mind and spirit.

We celebrate Carlos’ achievements while expressing deep gratitude to the Areas and National Movements whose dedication has made Vision 2030 a reality. Together, we are passionately committed to continue to be champions of Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, a Sustainable Planet and a Just World.”
