Founded in 1911 in Assuit, YMCA Egypt has grown into a vibrant network of 25 branches nationwide. With over 77,000 members and two new associations set to open by the end of the year, YMCA Egypt plays a vital role in supporting individuals and communities across the country.

Despite financial and cultural challenges, YMCA Egypt continues to expand its reach while staying true to the core values of the global YMCA Movement. “We conduct meetings and seminars for everyone, regardless of race, gender, age, nationality, religion, or political differences,” says Samy Armia Nashed, National General Secretary of YMCA Egypt. “Through this close relationship between all members of society, we have seen that peace and acceptance can prevail”.

Youstina Maher, National Coordinator and a YMCA member since the age of 5, adds, “This is crucial to who we are, as we work to achieve the aims of Vision 2030”.

A growing National Movement

YMCA Egypt is expanding with two new associations set to open: YMCA New Valley in western Egypt and YMCA Mansoura in the delta region.

According to Samy, up to 6 million people cannot find job opportunities, and skills training in areas like plumbing, carpentry, electricity, construction and more will be highly beneficial. The New Valley location will operate the country’s largest advanced vocational training centre, specialising in agricultural, animal production and ornamental plants will also be provided, Youstina said.

“The centre will hire university professors and specialists, and we will even provide residential facilities for trainees”, explains Youstina. To support these efforts, local businessmen and community members are contributing funds.

Leadership development

One of YMCA Egypt’s core missions is to empower young people to take on leadership roles. The General Authority (Board members) and associations provide opportunities for young people to self-govern their departments, elect their leaders, and shape their own management style, with minimal administrative intervention.

“This approach has been very positive over the past 30 years, with many YMCA sons and daughters going on to become Ministers and Governors in Egypt”, says Samy.

Diverse programming for all ages

Alongside vocational training and youth leadership, YMCA Egypt offers a wide range of programs to meet the needs of its diverse communities:

  • Cultural programmes: Workshops on health, nutrition, environmental protection, and world cultures.
  • Social programmes: Entertainment events, educational workshops, and trips, with special attention to intergenerational communication.
  • Spiritual programmes: Weekly gatherings and participation in the World Week of Prayer, emphasising Christian values and spiritual growth.
  • Sports programmes: Sports academies across Egypt offer training in basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and more.

YMCA Egypt offers numerous sports and educational programmes for disabled persons, and Youstina has been a key figure in organising those activities. “We are all human beings”, she says. “We must support them, create opportunities, and show them care and love.”

Moving forward

Despite the challenges of navigating a diverse community, securing funding, and dealing with regulations, YMCA Egypt continues to grow. With a focus on youth development, leadership training, peace education, and vocational training, YMCA Egypt is critical in providing Meaningful Work opportunities aligned with Vision 2030.

Samy emphasises, “We must do good for everyone so that we may reap good from everyone. When we invest in the development of minds and human potential, the positive impact on society is tremendous”.
