Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Support – Myanmar Earthquake Crisis
31 March, 2025
On 28 March 2025, at 12:53 PM local time, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.72 on the Richter Scale struck central Myanmar, severely impacting Mandalay City, Nay Pyi Taw (the capital), Southern East Shan State, and the Sagaing Region. The tremors were felt as far as Yangon and even Bangkok, Thailand.
Tragically, over 2,000 lives have been lost, with more than 3,000 injured and many still missing. Reports continue to come in, and the scale of the destruction is still being assessed. In addition to the tragic loss of life, the quake has left buildings in ruins and disrupted electricity, water, telecommunications, and mobile networks across multiple regions.
Amidst this catastrophe, Myanmar YMCA is working tirelessly to support affected communities. Despite the damage to its own facilities in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw, the YMCA is mobilizing teams and resources for emergency relief efforts.
In collaboration with the Scout Association of Myanmar, Myanmar YMCA has formed a Joint Humanitarian Assistance Committee to coordinate response activities on the ground, especially in the worst-hit areas.
The purpose of this requested funding is to support ‘MPCA’ (Multi Purpose Cash Assistance) for the people who are now living with extreme difficulties after the earthquake in Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Naypyitaw Region, Taunggyi Region and Inle Region.
The General Secretaries of our local YMCA branches in Myanmar have already conducted visits and noted the priority needs of food, water, medical care and personal safety items such as masks, gloves, safety shoes, First Aid kits, pads, mosquito nets, ground sheets, etc.
As part of the Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs (APAY) and the World YMCA Movement, Myanmar YMCA is calling for urgent humanitarian support from our global YMCA family and partners.
We invite all National Movements, partners, and friends of the YMCA to stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar during this critical time. Your support—whether through financial contributions, supplies, or advocacy—can make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected.
